Wessex Region vs London & Home Counties Region
The annual match against the London & Home Counties region took place at High Post GC on 14/5/26. Normally a 6 pairs format, it was reduced to 5 pairs due to L & HC last minute changes. The teams assembled and enjoyed a hearty breakfast buffet before heading out onto the course.
Out first were Andy Beal and Andy Rideout up against another strong pairing, with both Andy’s unusually receiving shots. Home course knowledge prevailed with 2 & 1 win for Wessex.
Next out were Regional Captain Alastair Baldwin and debutant Karen Banbrook, familiar partners to each other at Marlborough. Both played well and romped home with a 6 & 5 win – Wessex 2 matches up.
Third out were Tim Checketts and Ashley Redford also on debut, on paper this was always going to be tough match up against a scratch player along with the new RM for L & HC. A terrific fight going to the wire with Tim in awe of the distance that Ashley was able to achieve but the win going to the L & HC pair 2 up. A valiant effort – team score Wessex 2 L & HC 1.
Fourth pair were Ian Hulse and ever present Mike Allen, this one sounded close up until the latter stages where the Wessex pair pulled away and gained a 3 & 2 win. There were reports of net eagle chances in this one. Wessex 3 L & HC 1.
The final pair were Alex Taylor and Les Trute, this one really was a close affair with honours shared with the match halved.
The final score was Wessex 3.5 L & HC 1.5 so Wessex retained the Crystal.
After freshening up everyone recounted their matches in the bar before sitting down for a well earned meal. After a few words from each Captain, Rob Shaw the L & HC Captain presented the Crystal to Ali.
A great day was had by all and thanks go to everyone at High Post for hosting us and showcasing what a great venue they have.
